Since I’m not a single parent I had to consult my parents on this one; specifically my Mom. For most of my childhood it was her income that kept the family afloat, and that with me and my three siblings as my Dad was invested full time as a Missionary (and as you might know, Missionaries seldom get paid, financially). So, a quick word with her, and I was enlightened as to her central strategy for handling finances.

Firstly, cutbacks
This isn’t her strategy, but obviously having to stretch the budget, certain cutbacks were needed; for instance luxury items were out (including things like pocket money, a computer and most times even sweets). It also meant we only had one car – there were always inconveniences, but these things you just have to live with. There were times when my Mom’s salary just wasn’t enough (when unexpected expenditures arose, like car repairs for instance) and she had to alternate between paying some bills one month, and then prioritizing the other bills the next month. Our school fees had to be subsidized as well, and to put things further into perspective, there were days I can remember having cereal for dinner because there simply wasn’t any other food in the house. Crucially though, I can proudly say that I never went to bed hungry.

So it comes to the plan; actually it’s a very simple one that just requires some discipline and diligence. Essentially it’s summed up in an old and simple enough theory involving four things;

A jar

Stones

Sand

And water

The stones represent the big things that need taking care of, like car payments, the mortgage/rent, bills etc. The sand could then represent things like travel expenses, school fees and perhaps even retail accounts. The water comprises all the luxury items, and the way my Mom did it, even food was in this category (though I do have many great memories of chocolate cake – licking the mixing bowl – and some really great puddings, she is an excellent cook); entertainment was of course also a luxury, so I did without a PlayStation or Nintendo. Yeah, as a kid I often had to, as SpongeBob would put it, use my “IMAGINATION”, something children these days are doing less and less – it also sowed a great seed for my current writing career.

So of course for a sound budget, you need to put the stones in the jar first, then the sand and lastly pour in the water – if you mess with that order, something’s bound to get left outside the jar.
Ultimately sacrifices always need to be made; many single parents live above their means just to keep up appearances – but what is that really worth? Yes you won’t be living in the nicest house or driving a great car, but you don’t need it and hey, I turned out pretty good without those.
